Mercury "Glass" Ornaments Make a Comeback, One Size Does Not Fit All, Make a Statement with Flocking!

Holiday Newsletter Volume 7

EVERYTHING OLD IS NEW AGAIN - JUST BETTER!

Back in the day of holiday decorating, interiorscapers tried to use the ornaments used in the home. Looked beautiful but you only had to drop a glass ornament once with the glass shards all over to realize how dangerous they were. Then as plastic ornaments became available, we switched. Worked great but they were plain round globes without much of a designer's touch. You and your clients longed for the handmade, hand-blown look of yesteryear.

Here at Autograph we realized the problem and worked with our suppliers to fix it. Finally, we have the answer. We now offer not only plastic, non-breakable globes, spires, and a myriad of other shapes, but we now have a new line of Plastic Mercury Glass Finish Ornaments.  They look like the old fashioned real mercury glass but without the breaking. Available in Red, Green, Gold, Silver, Brown, Purple, Blue, and Teal colors. Perfect for that vintage holiday look!

Major Focal Point You May Overlooked

For commercial buildings one of the most important locations to decorate is the entrance. As you walk in, you usually have high ceilings. Some buildings with different floors overlooking the lobby below. Usually, these spaces have one or two revolving doors. Atop these doorways is a perfect spot to place a holiday tree or scene. If you have access to power this is a great location for lights. The beauty of placing a tree up high is that you will not need to use one that is very tall. You might even want to create a grouping of different height trees. Don't forget to cover tree stand with more greenery or colorful replica poinsettia.

Next, the windows. Usually there are large windows along the front entrance of the building. A large wreath in those flanking the doorway makes quite a statement. A large bow and some colorful ornaments representing local colors should do the trick.

Scan the lobby for a reception desk, information kiosk or security desk. This is yet another great location for either garlands or swags to add that extra touch.

The next area to look at are the overlooking floors. Brass railings? More garland! Drape your garland in equal distances. The usual rule of thumb is to measure the horizontal length and multiply by 1.5 to get the length of sections you will need. Keep in mind that sections come in 9 foot lengths and in various widths or thickness. The trick to installing garland on metal railings is to use plastic ties or green pipe cleaners.

Lastly, if there is till money in the budget, check out the elevator banks. Consider placing large, and we mean large, poinsettia on the sides flanking the elevators. Think about each floor, every other floor and so on...

One Size Does Not Fit All!

Along with trees in various heights, widths, and configurations, we also supply our interiorscape clients with the right size garland for your needs.

Yes, most garland comes in 9 foot lengths, lights, or no lights, and in 12" widths. That works for most jobs, but one of the biggest errors we see is when garland is too skinny for a given situation. Lobbies, shopping malls are huge. Some are several stories tall and spaces that seem to go on forever. It is important you use the appropriate width garland. On pages 213-224 you will find garland in all shapes and sizes!  Garland in the right size, garland that is not shy, garland that makes a statement.

Helping Interiorscapers Fill Their Holiday Sales Kit

Swags are not the Holiday Design element that immediately comes to mind but for that place that needs them, no other piece will do as much, as well. Think of those Roman Arenas of History Past. The Emperor sat in the Royal Box with Swags of greenery setting him off. They were like the color Purple demarcating that "something important is going on here". That same Swag design is on page 225 of the Autograph Holiday Catalog. Pre-lit with clear lights and with thinner ends with tails dropping down at the ends to a middle thickness of 18", today they are used to decorate mantels and balconies.

New And Old Looks For Holiday Trees, Wreaths, and Garlands

Flocking has been around for a number of years but, until lately, you thought you had to buy the Trees already flocked. For the most part this is the best way.  Check out the wealth of Flocked product we offer in our Holiday Catalog pages 167-173. Light dusting or Heavy flocking communicates a winter, snow filled scene just as Mother Nature can deliver, and all the nostalgia that goes along with it. All needle types and a wide range of heights and widths are available. Pre-Lit with Warm White LED or Winter White lighting, these beauties stand out against any backdrop. So for "just a touch" or for Heavy forest in the mountains snow, use the flocked versions for Holiday.

And, when using Flocked product, just think about how different color ornaments look against the white backdrop.  Heck, fashion colors such as our blue and green stand out like gems in the Jewelry store. Mix them in Matte and Shiny Finishes for an even more opulent effect.  Absolutely Striking!
